Sister Mary Caplice, CND (Sister Saint Mary Michael), a Sister of the Congregation of Notre Dame, died unexpectedly at Andrus On Hudson in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York on July 4. Born in New York City, she entered the Novitiate of the Congregation de Notre Dame in Bourbonnais, Illinois, making her first profession of vows there in 1955 and her perpetual vows in August, 1961 in Montreal. She was predeceased by her parents, Michael Caplice and Mary (O’Mahney) Caplice and two brothers, Rev. Richard Caplice, S.J. and Neil Caplice.
For over 50 years Sister Mary was involved in Catholic education in Connecticut, Florida, and New York. In 1989, hearing the CND call to go where Sisters were few, she became principal at Little Flower Elementary School in Pensacola, and then Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Pensacola – Tallahassee, Florida. She also offered her gifts of insight and organization to her religious community, serving as Associate to the Province Leader and as Province Leader for the United States Province of the Congregation of Notre Dame.
She will be deeply missed by her brother John (Brother Stephen) Caplice, F.S.C., her sister-in-law Betty Caplice, her nieces and their families, many friends and relatives, as well as by her CND family. A wake and funeral were held in New York City at St Jean Baptiste High School and Church on Saturday, July 7.
