What is Catholic Social Teaching?
Catholic Social Teaching is a rich treasure of wisdom about building a just society and living lives of holiness amid the challenges of modern society. Founded in the message of the Gospel, modern Catholic Social Teaching has been grown from a tradition of documents written by the popes, the bishops and Church councils and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The depth and richness of this tradition is best understood from reading the actual documents.
There are seven main themes in Catholic Social Teaching:
- Life and the dignity of the human person
- Call to family, community and participation
- Rights and responsibilities
- Option for the poor and vulnerable
- The dignity of work and the rights of workers
- Solidarity
- Care for God’s creation
The Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee, in formal ministries and in the caring actions of the faithful, is engaged in promoting these seven principles and acting on them, both here in Northwest Florida and throughout the world, to bring about peace and justice.
