Scripture Passage
“This people says: ‘Not now has the time come to rebuild the
house of the Lord.’ Now thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘Consider your
ways! You have sown much, but have brought in little; … eaten, but
not satisfied; … clothed, but not warmed and he who earned wages
earned them for a bag with holes in it!’” (Haggai 1: 2b
5-6).
True then, true today! Our wages, particularly our tithes, when
used for ourselves rather than the Lord’s designs, we never benefit.
By keeping it from the Lord, for our own purposes, like those of
old, the tithe goes in pockets (bags) with holes in it… A bill here,
traffic ticket there, water pipe bursts, need new carpeting,
unexpected doctor’s visit, etc. When we keep the Lord’s tithe, even
part of it, we never benefit from it! It is his, for his designs,
for his church’s mission, for his poor. Our tradition
says the same: St. Peter Chrysologus (Lent, 3rd
week Tuesday reading). “Therefore do not lose by saving but gather
in by scattering. Give to the poor and you will give to your self.
You will not be allowed to keep what you have refused to give to
others!” (A pocket with holes in it?!) On the other
hand: St. John of God (March 8 reading). “For
if we share with the poor out of love for God whatever he has given
to us, we shall receive according to his promise a hundredfold in
eternal life.” Tithing is a way of life here and for life
hereafter. Father Richard Altenbaugh can be reached at
941-0445.
