A bit of background on being a Benedictine
by Brother Kenan
St. Benedict, (born c.480 - died c.547), was a founder of monastic communities and a rule giver for monks living in a community under an abbot. His purpose is stated within his "Rule,” namely that Christ may bring us all to everlasting life. St. Benedict's main achievement is a "Rule" containing precepts for his monks, referred to as the Rule of St. Benedict. It has a unique spirit of balance and moderation. The Benedictine motto is "Ora et Labora," which translated means prayer and work. St. Benedict wanted his monks to touch lives of others with truth and compassion, with Christ-like actions which will lead us all to the Father. As a monk I'm to help spread the Gospel and to make a difference in the lives of the people I meet through the use of my talents, gifts and abilities.
